SBA FAQs
Digging through the Small Business Administration website I came across some Frequently Asked Questions
The idea of a gaining entrepreneurial advice from a bureaucratic government agency struck me as more than a little ironic, so I decided that I would attempt to answer some of these FAQs from the perspective of an entrepreneur. Here’s the first, others to follow.
1. Do I have what it takes to own/manage a small business?
The answer is yes. If you didn’t have the desire, you wouldn’t be reading this FAQ or searching for this type of information. And, where there is desire, a way can be found.
Entrepreneurship, the desire to own our own business stems from an innate desire to take control of our own destiny, to rise above our circumstances and reach for a better life. It offers a chance to make a difference, to survive by our wits and to bring a sense of meaning and purpose to our lives.
We all have the potential to succeed. The characteristics required to succeed came on the hard drive. The problem is the operating system.
Most of us have been conditioned to think like employees, for an old-economy organizational mindset, to do what we’re told, to follow the script and leave our opinions at the door. That’s the wrong operating system for starting and growing a successful business.
To succeed as an entrepreneur requires creativity, imagination and a solution-oriented mindset. It requires curiosity and courage, passion and persistence. It requires self-reliance, resourcefulness and a genuine desire to solve problems and to be of service to others.
Entrepreneurship is a mindset. It’s the operating system that exposes opportunity, ignites our ambition and fosters the innate characteristics that lead to success, characteristics that all came on the hard drive.
